In the 1930s, Americans were much more self sufficient.

That's true. And the predominate culture of that time was much more on self reliance than what exists today.

The population of America in the 1930s was about 125 million.

I don't see where population numbers in itself make that much of a difference..

The notion of 200 million of today's fat city dwellers voluntarily starving, when grocery store shelves are empty, and them not walking out to the country-side to fight and kill for food for themselves and their kids, seems implausible to me.

We're a long way from that scenario, IMO. Aside from the stupidity of burning corn in our gas tanks, the US is a large exporter of food to the world. Potential shortages here will change priorities, but empty store shelves here will be a non event for the foreseeable future. Again, IMO..

More likely will be a slow decline in living standards, high unemployment, and a continuing general malaise in the populace as a result. Too many people are willing to drink the poison of more government control to support them and bail them out. That's what they've been taught by the "public education" establishment and is being continually reinforced through the propaganda of the MSM and our political overlords..

Edit: "Give me your tired, your poor", a welcome message to the oppressed for the opportunity to better themselves in a free society, has morphed into "Gimme freebies, I'm entitled"..

It will take a large dose of cold water reality to wake people up. What's inevitable is that one of these days Uncle Sugar will announce "account overdrawn, no more available funds", but who knows when that will occur?? Perhaps that will instigate some major changes..
