3Com to Demonstrate Leading-Edge Switching Technology During Retail Delivery Conference
Business Wire - December 02, 1997 13:07

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BAI/Retail Delivery '97 Conference, 3Com Booth No. 1208

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 2, 1997--3Com Corporation (NASDAQ:COMS), a leader in providing innovative networking solutions for the financial industry, today announced that it will demonstrate its award-winning CoreBuilder 3500 Layer 3 high function switch for LAN routing during the Bank Administration Institute's (BAI) Retail Delivery '97 Conference, Dec. 2-5 in New Orleans.

3Com's new Layer 3 switch, which provides ten times the speed at one-tenth the cost of a traditional backbone router, was named "Best of Show" in the Network Infrastructure Category at the Fall Networld + Interop Conference.

The CoreBuilder 3500 switch is the first product to leverage the Flexible Intelligent Routing Engine (FIRE) architecture, a fully-programmable Layer 3 switching, wire-speed routing ASIC technology, which is the heart of 3Com's third-generation Layer 3 switching architecture. This unparalleled switching technology will enable financial institutions to easily and cost-effectively migrate to high-speed, fully-switched networks.

"3Com continues to provide the financial market with the best performing network solutions at the lowest possible cost," said Rodney Scott, 3Com's financial industry manager. "The CoreBuilder 3500 switch provides a scalable solution that will enable customers to meet their growing business requirements without compromising existing network investments."

3Com will also feature its Total Control remote access concentrator running the EdgeServer card with TIB/Rendezvous, the communications middleware that provides anonymous publish and subscribe capabilities that allow mainstream developers to easily and quickly build client/server applications to instantly communicate with each other as events occur. With TIB/Rendezvous running on 3Com's Total Control remote access concentrator, personal computer applications can interoperate on a real-time basis in a distributed environment, improving access and speeding the delivery of important financial market information to users.

Siemens to Exhibit Virtual Banking Video Kiosk in 3Com's Booth

Siemens, a leader in the automation, information systems and telecommunications industries, will demonstrate its new Virtual Banking Video Kiosk in the 3Com booth, no. 1208, during the conference. The Kiosk enables financial services companies to serve their customers, in remote, non-staffed locations such as malls, airports, hotel lobbies and supermarkets. Attendees will see a live demonstration of a Video Call Center agent interacting with the Video Kiosk over a 3Com network.

The Siemens Kiosk uses smart card technology and live videoconferencing, videoconferencing-enabled call centers, Web-enabled custom applications and remote management to deliver high-value functionality and customer service. The Kiosk allows financial institutions to sell their products and services electronically, including stocks, mutual funds, life and auto insurance as well as traditional savings, checking and loan products, any time and any place.

"Kiosk's generate revenue by selling products and services at a very low cost of sales," said Tom Sperduto, finance industry marketing manager of Siemens. "The Kiosk can be deployed anywhere a financial institution wants to reach its customers, and all it takes is a network connection."

Award Winning PalmPilot Connected Organizer

3Com will also demonstrate its popular pocket-sized PalmPilot connected organizer at the exhibition. The PalmPilot platform provides instant access to hundreds of phone numbers, addresses, memos, and to-do lists. And with HotSync technology, the data on a user's PC can be synchronized with the data on the PalmPilot organizer at the touch of a button.

The PalmPilot platform is an open software architecture for handheld computing that provides an ideal basis for third-party developers to create and deliver successful mobile computing solutions. Many applications have already been developed for the financial industry enabling users to perform financial calculations, investment analysis, interest rate conversions and other useful functions.

At this year's Comdex show in November, the computer industry's largest U.S. exhibition, the PalmPilot connected organizer received major industry recognition. PC/Computing Magazine awarded the PalmPilot Professional Edition connected organizer with its MVP award for the handheld computing category, PC Portables named the PalmPilot organizer the handheld computing product of the year, and Home Office Computing gave the product its annual Editors' Choice award.

The PalmPilot connected organizer currently holds 66% of the worldwide standard handheld computer market (Dataquest, Nov. 1997). In addition, 3Com recently shipped its one millionth unit after just eighteen months of shipping, breaking a computer industry record for the fastest time to one million units of any computer hardware product ever.

Interested in the progress of an international 56K standard?

From the latest ITU note of October 20:

The Study Group 16 Working Party meeting also made considerable progress
on the new Recommendation for PCM modems (also known as 56k modems).
Because these new modems are designed for connections which are digital
at one end and have only one analogue-to-digital conversion, they are
expected to be widely used for new applications such as Internet and
on-line service access. The commencement of the formal approval process
for this Recommendation is now rescheduled for the next meeting of Study
Group 16, in January-February 1998, with final approval expected in
September of that year.

<< So, you're saying that my intentional misspelling wasn't a misspelling after all? >>

It depends on whom you ask :-)
I'm sure there are people who always and only use 'sic' and some always and only 'sick'.
When I first came to the US for college, the Expository Writing instructor kept on fixing my spelling of 'colour' by striking out the u, unwilling to accept any variation of the word.
On the other hand, the physics professor spelt 'circuit' 3 different ways on the same blackboard. All of them wrong: circit, cerkit, and cirquit.
The moral of the story is spell however it pleases you. :-)

At least you got an apology:
