Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. (MCC) {4010} will start digital video disk (DVD) production at its affiliate company, Mitsubishi Chemical Infonics Pte. Ltd. in Singapore, where a new DVD-RAM (rewritable disk) production line will be added. For production of DVD-R (writable disk), the existing CD-R (writable compact disk) production line will be modified.

All construction work will be completed in April next year to be ready for rising demand. Production capacity will be 200,000 disks for DVD-RAMs and 300,000 disks for DVD-R per month.

DVD-ROM production is now planned by other companies in Europe and the U.S., but DVD-RAM production overseas by MCC is the first among Japanese manufacturers.

MCC has production bases for recording media in Mizushima (Okayama Prefecture) and Naoetsu (Niigata Prefecture) and overseas including the U.S., Ireland, and Singapore. Mitsubishi Chemical Infonics is the strategic production base for CD-Rs, CD-RWs (rewritable compact disc), and HDs (hard disk). MC Infonics will increase monthly production capacity to 3 million CD-Rs, 700,000 CD-RWs, and one million HDs in December this year. For DVD-RAM production, the company will monitor the timing of production to coincide with the introduction of DVD drives which will be marketed next year.
