Richard: I guess I will take the BLAME for pushing the "close before the end of the day" rule. Personally since I have begun using this rule I have increased the success rate of my trades substantially.

<I was just trying to see what was driving the "DAYtrading" surge, and why the out at
close was a basic rule. >

What's driving the "daytrading surge" is cheap commissions, instant electronic access to market information and executions, inexpensive quotes and charting software. This type of trading wasn't even possible a few years ago, and transaction costs made it practical only for exchange members.

I agree that there are better, more manageable ways to make money. But there are so many ways to make money in this market, what determines which approach a particualar person uses? I do think that the day traders are attracted to the substantial challenge, and almost immediately knowing if they made a good or bad move, and seeing the results of a profitable trade that same day. We are talking about a form of immediate gratification here. And imagine the sense of satisfaction a trader must feel when he looks back after one year and sees that he was successful in this pursuit.
