I agree in principle - but there are other taxes than income tax. This is an interesting site:

So while the Cato and hard right cite how half the people pay nothing, it isn't really true if you look at total tax load versus wealth.

Here is a graph from the site that shows how regressive the TOTAL tax load is. State and local taxes undo some of the progressive nature that is attempted at the federal level.
