DREAM MACHINES 'Tis the season for racking one's brain for a
holiday gift. While a bespoke robot or dog may not be for everyone,
it's definitely, well, memorable. After connecting each of the 500
parts on the Robot Commander, left, proud owners can get the 'bot to
turn its head, move its arm or open its mouth (C-3PO it's not). For
a simpler task, the remote-controlled Robodog can be assembled with
150 parts. ($300 and $120; Hammacher Schlemmer; 800-543-3366)
STRIKE A POSE Big screen doesn't have to mean big headaches.
While plenty of home-theater systems look as glamorous as an elephant
* in the living room, the freestanding Projectavision Digital Home
Theater ($10,000; 888-559-7588) has a Carolyn Roehm profile. The
display has a whopping 60-in. rear-projection mode, but can blast all
the way up to 20 ft. when the projector alone is used to display onto
a blank wall--great for Super Bowl parties or delirious New Year's
Eve fetes.
