For the second quarter ended August 2, 1997, sales totalled $39.7 million, up by 29.5 percent from $30.6 million a year earlier. Net income for the quarter amounted to $1,401,000, or $0.23 per share, an increase of 97 percent over the previous year's figures of $711,000 and $0.12, respectively.

In the first six months of the fiscal year, sales grew by 27.3 percent, from $58.3 million as at August 3, 1996 to $74.2 million for the first half of 1997. Net income for the same period totalled $1,766,000, or $0.29 per share - a 102 percent increase over the $873,000 and $0.15 per share posted in the first half of 1996.

Commenting on the results, Paul Delage Roberge said, ''We are very satisfied with the steady improvement in our performance. The increase in sales and earnings during the first half of 1997 reflects a solid performance by all Groupe San Francisco banners. Moreover, the net income for the first six months represents a Company record for that period.''

''We are continuing to invest in our future growth,'' he added. ''Our third Les Ailes de la Mode megaboutique opened its doors on August 6 in Place Ste-Foy in the Quebec City area. The initial results are promising and the considerable feedback we have received has been highly favourable. ''Early in August, Groupe San Francisco also introduced its own credit card - Les Ailes - MasterCard - a smart card that offers its holders numerous benefits. The Company plans to launch an Internet site at bsf.ca on September 15.
