MPEG2 used for videoconferencing. Optivision, CUBE customer??...........

Starvision and Optivision Demonstrate High Quality Multimedia
Conferencing Over Switched Routing Networks

High Performance MPOA-Compliant Switched Routing
Network Delivers Clinical Quality Telemedicine.

CHICAGO, IL, Dec. 2 /CNW-PRN/ - Starvision Multimedia has joined forces
with Optivision to demonstrate the power of video applications using high
speed switched routing networks at the Radiological Society of North America's
(RSNA) 83rd annual meeting at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois, December
1-5, 1997, booth 6507. Utilizing Optivision's LiveSystem MPEG 2 video
networking system and Starvision's StarMED(TM) telemedicine application, the
companies will be demonstrating clinical telemedicine over Newbridge's
VIVID(TM) switched routing solution, a high performance Multiprotocol-over-ATM
(MPOA) switched routing network.
This initiative dramatically increases the opportunities to deliver high
quality multimedia services and applications to end users. Using these
technologies, organizations will be able to use their MPOA-enabled next
generation LAN infrastructure to deliver high quality, high resolution video,
CD-quality audio and high speed data sharing for multimedia conferencing
services to users' desktops. Applications include telemedicine, distance
education and business conferencing.
''Although low speed communication lines (POTS or ISDN) are adequate to
transfer medical images for interpretation or second opinion, we see an
emerging requirement for high speed, high bandwidth communication channels.
These will allow physicians to integrate video conferencing to image
transmission for high quality remote consultations,'' said Robert Dion,
Product Manager, IMPAX and Electronic Imaging Systems, Agfa Division of Bayer
Inc. ''Agfa IMPAX, the leading Picture Archiving and Communication System in
the world with over 275 sites installed, is ready to take advantage of high
speed communication channels.''
Optivision's LiveSystem Video Networking Systems provides a set of
software and hardware products and tools for building video intranets.
LiveSystem systems input video and audio, digitize and compress the data using
the MPEG compression standard, and output the data on a variety of network
interfaces such as T1, multiple T1s, V.35, RS530/449, 10/100 Ethernet and
25/155 ATM. LiveSystems can be remotely controlled via Optivision's LiveWare
network management software. At the receiving end, the compressed data is
decoded and output as high quality, high resolution video and audio.
''This demonstration showcases how Optivision's LiveSystem Video
Networking System coupled with today's high speed switched routing
environments can be used to deliver sophisticated end-to-end applications such
as telemedicine and distance education,'' said Reed Majors of Optivision.
Starvision's family of products enables service providers to supply
high-quality, real-time, multimedia communication services for end-users
across ATM networks thereby increasing revenue stream opportunities for
value-added services. The products, including the Services Platform and the
StarED(TM) distance education and StarMED(TM) telemedicine applications, take
advantage of the high bandwidth and low delay of broadband networks to deliver
premium quality multimedia services.
Starvision's StarMED is an advanced clinical telemedicine application that
enables healthcare organizations to control costs through more efficient use
of specialists, expand patient access to high quality care and facilitate
information-sharing among physicians. High quality video and audio,
specialized medical imaging software, DICOM 3.0 compliance and the
FDA-approved distributed medical image viewer enable physicians to collaborate
in real time for such medical specialties as teleconsultation and diagnosis,
telecardiology and teledermatology without the problems of video quality
associated with traditional video conferencing systems. The StarED distance
education application is appropriate for such medical applications as grand
rounds, continuing medical education (CME) and administrative conferencing.
The VIVID family of high-performance Local Area Network (LAN)
internetworking products delivers a powerful solution to meet the demands of
today's enterprise network environments. Based on the MPOA standard, the VIVID
switched routing architecture is the only standards-compliant, Layer 3
switching solution available today that eliminates the performance bottlenecks
and management complexity of conventional router network designs.
''Starvision is very excited to be demonstrating StarMED over the VIVID
switched routing infrastructure using Optivision's MPEG-based video networking
solutions,'' said Grant Henderson, Starvision's Telemedicine Product Manager.
''This initiative further serves to demonstrate Starvision's commitment to
transport layer independence in delivering its high quality service and
application products.''
