That's exactly what I was talking about. The bandwidth requirements are not that great, and even the latency requirements don't have to be real-time.

Come on, this isn't a real-time strategy game like Command & Conquer or Starcraft we're dealing with.


Exactly. I cannot image you REALLY need more than a packet every few minutes -- literally an immaterial amount of data. Anything more than that is just being a pig.

I am not saying I think it is a good idea. Just that many usage cases for smart grid includes that as a "feature". So claiming that extra bandwidth is not needed for a smart grid is not correct for some implementations.

It is needed if you want a real time model of what is going on at any given time. Having a snapshot that is minutes or hours old is not very helpful if you are trying to balance the load in real time.
