// OT // How Not to Make Money in the 97 Market// I just had to share with all the experience of one un-named "L", with whom I have had a delightful correspondence. I inquired as to why he said he hadn't made any money in the '97 market. The reply, in part: dlo- 1st off, I'm coming off of a broken-hearted one-way love affair with what's laughingly known as the microcap universe. After we get jilted for the umpteenth time, we face ourselves squarely in the mirror and say "Penny Stock... Penny Stock... penny schlock..." Although we click our heels together 3 times, we most emphatically do NOT go home. Money gone, we carry our most tender heart and what's left of our bank balance elsewhere. Not that they were ALL thieves; a lot of them were just the little companies that couldn't... but boy, did they have stories...(sigh). Other than that, factor in a large dollop of plain vanilla bad luck. Like I have a large position in MOYC. They have the best CMP slurry going. Documented @ Sandia, the national lab. But they're being sued by the reigning 800 lb gorilla, Cabot. and so don't sell squat. How about this one; my union's pension fiduciary is found with his hand in the till to the tune of $70,000. Which he has spent on lap-dancing. So I take my pension money out, just 'cause I hate these damn slime-molds; and roll the whole thing over into a self-directed IRA w/Vanguard. So far so good. I put all the money into small-cap index funds. In July. Remember July? "After a long period of outperformance, the large-cap segment was slipping into 2nd place to the newly resurgent small-cap sector; the large-caps, bruised by the strength in the dollar, which has tendency ya ta ya ta ya ta..." I got in at the top. Now they call that brief, flowering spring of out performance a little blip... Blip. That's they sound my wallet made as it slipped beneath the investing surface, falling soundlessly ever afterward through those dark and unimaginatively cold depths... So after that I subscribed to Value Line, where I was just in time to buy into the #1 stock in the #1 group (BJS in oil services)... HaH! My clock is most thoroughly cleaned. It gets so you never want to know what time it is ever again. Anyway, to shorten an endless story and, by the way, answer your question; I now have Value Line. They cover QCOM and MOT and ERICY; hence my interest. Those other telecoms simply aren't covered. Also, I'm trying to build a somewhat diversified portfolio (that, as I understand it, is the thing to do). So how many telecoms can dance on the head of a pin? (pin= the money I have left) Now, vis a vis globalstar and LOR, we're not talking profits yet, are we? I have a HUNGER for profits... even revenues; understandable, considering where I've been, eh? With some closing remarks, that sums up the experience of one battered tech investor... Can anyone top that?!! Would anyone WANT to?? TSO
