It would have been a better article if author hadn't turned it political near the end. Otherwise I agree with many of the points.

The issue should not be about being Democrat or Republican, IMO. If a person is in favor of human rights, it should generally extend to gay people and other people of color. Hispanics, who otherwise tend to be religious and socially conservative, could potentially be swayed to be more friendly to other aspects of the right wing agenda. He codes this as "some conservatives" but it is pretty clear who he talking about.
