There is no universal grounds to justify an abortion. And no particular justification is required. The Right to choose abortion, however, is justified by the universal human belief that all people have fundamental rights and freedoms and that each human being has an individual identity. This fact does not mean that people should have abortions--only that an abortion is a moral option for all woman. In a similar vein (for those to whom this is unclear) a person is not justified in killing themselves by any universal moral principle. But all people have the right to kill themselves. The justification should one take such action would be any of myriad reasons. But again--no particular justification is required. A person has a right to their life or they do not. If not, then all talk of rights is just nonsense and there can be no moral basis for human interactions. If people do have a right to their body then nobody can use force to use your body for their own objectives. For instance, even though you might have a blood type that someone else requires for their own life and their own ends, you are not required to allow that person to “hook up” to you on that basis. His or her need is NEVER your obligation. Thus there is no controversy over abortion and the “issue” is contrived. Humankind has accepted the principle that all people have human rights. Therefore, slavery has been abolished. Nobody can use another human for their own objectives. A terrible and bloody civil war was fought to secure this principle. And it should be unnecessary to fight it again. “It ignores or denies implicit consent In nearly all cases, the woman has already given implicit consent” No. Most pregnancies are unintended and in any event, the choices one makes can be changed at the will of the autonomous human. "It requires the use of disproportionate force I’ve already said a woman is justified in killing a rapist." But what about a less extreme situation, such as being groped: Ridiculous comment! That guy is a certifiable Nutjob! The force required to remove a fertilised egg is exactly what it is. The abortion issue is not about the complicated legalities involved in defining self defense. “It ignores or denies our social responsibilities toward others” What Nimrod! A fertilised egg is not a member of society. It is the property of the woman and she does not need to care for it in any way. Indeed, because her body and her life belongs to nobody other than herself…she can jump off a bridge or drink cyanide if she so chooses. Not rocket appliances, Ricky.
