A first-half of January rally would be an ideal rally to not only suck in sideline cash, but also a great time for bears to cover their losses by becoming unwilling buyers. By mid-January, though, it should become obvious that the USA is in recession and all the political back-and-forth to “cut the deficit” was a total failure. Recession means unemployment rates rising as jobs are lost and that causes an increase in the deficit which can't be stopped by jawboning of professional politicians. Expect a fiscal stimulus package to be proposed by the Administration, but blocked by Republicans. In the end, it looks like a trainwreck for the party of Lincoln, which seemingly is doing everything in its power to self-destruct.
