i have a book, actually a diary written before, during, and a bit after the great depression, i have been reading by an educated lawyer living in youngstown, ohio. just last night i was reading some of his entries in 1936, 1937, 1938, and into 1940. it is clear from his anecdotal inputs from day to day about the news and stock market, that the economy was going badly again. it is also clear roosevelt really disliked (hated) business intensely. it seems clear the reason business picked up at all was due to all kinds of goods the usa was supplying to europe's war effort. warp speed in the economy happened after pearl harbor.

the book is "the great depression, a diary" by benjamin roth. the editor is ledbetter and another roth.
