Maybe the problem is a lack of whale shit.

Wish we could convert all the Bull Shit on this thread (you know who you are.. ;) into whale shit..

But yea.. they eat huge quantities of zooplankton (krill) which obtained their Iron from the phytoplankton they consumed.

But any Iron they release in their fecal matter stays at the bottom, unless churned up by currents and upward swells. (which is why phytoplankton also flourish around such up-wellings)..
