I agree. Not only do I think there are separation of church and state issues with the government determining who is and isn't a valid church, the Catholic church is one of the largest property owners and yet they pay no property taxes here in California. The law in California makes no distinction between religions (surprisingly called "cults" in the law) and all properties used for worship are exempt.

As an agnostic, I end up subsidizing the largest land owner in the state (after the government itself). We still have to send fire trucks and police cars there when they need them... so, pragmatically, I don't see the rationale.

But we might as well be shouting at cyclones to reverse this policy. It is ingrained in the American psyche - religious entitlement.
