UPDATE to thread:

Well.....my victory was short-lived. After a day or so, my computer started running more slowly. Video were not loading or running choppilly. I'd get a plug-in container that would go up to 700 or 800 K or more. One issue I never mentioned before was that I could not go into my computer's security facility and turn off or on the firewall.

Cut to the bleepingcomputer forum. The person who'd been helping kept urging me to run Combofix. I was reluctant until yesterday since my computer had (I thought) been cleaned sufficiently.

Last night I ran Combofix. Two old files w/ desktop icons that had been on my computer for a couple years and that I'd tried to remove several times were removed. It also deleted several other files. After it finished I was again able to get into the firewall utility. Finally, the computer is running super-quietly now. The hard drive had been spinning at a high rpm for at least a year. It varied, but it never seemed to get to a quiet idle. Now it is. Video load normally again for the first time in many months, too.

So far so good.
