Have had the 'pleasure' of experiencing him as the latter at The Met and in Bayreuth and cannot disagree with you. Never heard him on the piano, though. I prefer Richter and Gould, his Sebastian Bach unrivalled.

Wagner recognized the bel canto value in Bellini, believe it or not.
Enough in writing to document that.
Maybe it - the bel canto - hit him somewhere else, where he was more sensitive - like Clinton.
