When Bo Gritz ran for president on the Populist Party ticket in 1992, he suggested Congress mint a trillion dollar coin to settle the national debt. I guess that wasn't so kooky after all. :)

"But, says Gagnon, the U.S. government would simply be using the money to keep spending at existing levels, so it wouldn’t create any extra inflation."

This is a load of crap. You can't just create $2Trillion dollars and not have any consequences. The USD would be sold significantly lower - especially given that there is no longer any Congressional control over America's finances. One more step to a dictatorship.

Shit, why not mint a trillion of them. No problems for a thousand years.

Isn't this equivalent to what the Fed is already doing, creating new money supply and buying up Treasuries?

this is much like having the central bank print money
We should stop being stingy about this. Every red blooded American should get a $50K bonus for Christmas. Let's all enjoy a little prosperity. The needed borrowing could be backed by a handful of $1Trillion coins, bearing the visage of the President.

We should have a national referendum about this.
