On phones I don't think it matters very much (market share)

From a stock holder perspective it doesn't matter as much when you have huge secular growth. But when that slows, and ends it will matter a lot.

Until recently I thought iPhones were the best on most metrics. Now it seems they're the best on a few metrics. I think they're falling behind.

Market share.
I agree with your post. Market share matters when it eventually can become profit share. Also, it is a way to shove potential competitors out of the market.

Phones are not PCs. Many PC users were forced to use PC by their employer or by an available application and, once a a PC user, you would get stuck.

Folks who by an Android, can turn around and easily by an iPhone. Google is trying to create some stickiness with their various applications but they are not there yet. Apple certainly is ahead in this regard.

Another advantage the PC industry had vs. Macs was the perception that PCs were cheaper. They were but people didn't understand that you get what you pay for. More recently, look at the net books. It was reported that Apple couldn't compete with the net books. I guess folks are getting smarter. Also, the phones come subsidized so it only matters on the very very low end where poor folk want a smart phone. Android does well here but is not the area where most companies want to be. Also, these people can eventually upgrade to the iPhone anyway.

The ecosystem is very important and the Android world does not have the tablets, computers, and phones all working together as well as Apple does. But, it does take some time for PC people to migrate completely to the Mac and iOS but it is happening.
