Wharfie, you need to take a broader view of things: < It's an ongoing experiment, and we'll find out, someday. If our civilization is still viable in 200 years, there will be a serial study of it. >

I know it's fun being alive now. I'm busy doing it myself. But civilisations now will definitely NOT be viable in 200 years [or even probably 20 years for your personal civilisation - using the word "civilized" loosely]. I'm sorry to break it to you but mortality has not yet been solved. Any civilisations around in 200 years will not look much like those that currently gnash their teeth over CO2. They will certainly not be worried about the CO2 and other hot air you emit now.

Think back to 1812. It might surprise you to know that they were not concerned about deep packet inspection, 256 bit encryption, traffic jams, CO2, or even acid rain. Mortality was an issue then and there was plenty of it around, with life expectancy nearer 20 than the current 70. They were more concerned about food supplies and designing violins and so on to play the 1812 overture [which wasn't created until long after].

By 2222, which will be quite a grub as a year, your concerns about CO2 will be on no interest whatsoever.

Parents often think their children should take parental concerns seriously, but they don't. Do you really think that our great, great, great, great, great, great, great grand children will give a toss about current CO2 worries?

You don't really think that a river of SUVs will be roaring down Highway 405 do you? Do you understand that the steam engine hadn't been invented 200 years ago?

In 200 years, things will be a lot different. CO2 emissions now will be totally irrelevant then.

That's one possibility. Another is that it won't. A third is that it will change paths. It's an ongoing experiment, and we'll find out, someday.

I think that statement applies to everything from ocean acidification, methane release, to "tipping points" due to global warming.

It certainly applies to the extremely dire predictions of James Hansen in 1988 when he started this AGW debate.

Continue to collect more data and look for any rapid changes, in either direction.
