Everything I know tells me that is dead wrong. The vast majority of "stupid people" can benefit greatly from education. The last thing we should do is go down that elitist road of thinking only some can make it, when I know most can make it just fine.

Too many people mistake ignorance for stupidity. I have seen that mistake made all my life and you are making the same mistake.

And when people make that mistake they don't try to solve the problem. That is the danger and that is sort of what you are advocating. managing something you do not think is solvable.

That is exactly what people used to think about blacks and women. Why women were not allowed to vote.

AIMNSHO.

<<I've met plenty of stupid people- and education won't make them "smart". It might make them do things that are less stupid, but you can't take someone with a not-so-great brain and make them "smart". You can probably find something for them to do, but let's not pretend it's brain surgery.

The problem in the past has been mixing up "stupid" with people who came from impoverished backgrounds. The results look similar- but the impoverished background child can be educated, if the child is intelligent.

In a high tech society we must find ways to occupy our stupid. That's probably something government should be involved in- and is, but not very effectively at the moment.

George W. Bush is an excellent example of someone with an average intellect, who due to an accident of birth, had access to the best schools, the finest tutors and the best America had to offer. At the end of that process, he was STILL a person with an average intellect, who went on to become the worst president of modern times.

Education won't make a dumb person smart, or an average person a genius. But, we should make it so that ALL our smart people have access to it.

"In a high tech society we must find ways to occupy our stupid."

I thought we had reality TV and Fox "News"?
