DAK,

I agree! I don't know why you're picking on me neither. Aren't you a professed options trader. Isn't your time horizon much closer to 10 seconds than 10 years? :-)

Reason for talking about months is that many mutual funds emphasize their short term performance when it's outstanding only to hose the suckers once they buy.

Motley Fool runs 2 real $ portfolios (not Beating the Dow) which include all costs. Beating the Dow is an educational and entertaining part of their website.

Data Mining deals with finding the solution after the facts are known.
Backtesting to 1961 helped ensure that O'Higgins didn't do data mining with his 1979-90 subset. O'Shaughnessy subsequently backtested this system all the way to the 1920s.

It is an oddity. Most systems work until they're widely known. Beating the Dow has continued even after the books were published, and the popular press picked it up; and there are at least 3 websites that provide info, etc.

David, I wouldn't dream of expecting an options trader to hold a position for 1 year or 1.5years. For me, I find it a suitable strategy and will continue to migrate funds to that strategy.

Ian.
