Agree that the debt should have been payed down big time during Clinton and Bush especially Clinton... they wasted a huge opportunity. Bush should have done as Reagan would have done and paid for the war upfront.

As for Carter I totally disagree.... late Nixon--> Carter price of oil went up nearly 10X. That was especially huge back then in real prices and the fact that the economy was much more dependent on oil...

The whole "Jimmy Carter malaise" was simply a campaign theme just like they did to Bush and now... price of oil under Bush soared and has remained pretty high. The Carter "meme" was chanted again by that dopey Dan Quayle in his sad run for the presidency. Further, it's rarely mentioned that he brought in the "cure" for the "stagflation" (Volker), who, to this day, is probably the ONLY PERSON in ANY position of power in this country to JUST DO THE RIGHT THING, without worrying about what the media was crowing about. He jammed up rates and squeezed out inflation, renewing credibility to the dollar and the economic system, setting the stage for the great boom.
