What you have in Syria is a tiny minority rule of the original warlike "Alawites", the "Twelvers" of which Hassad's Grandfather & his father belonged surrounded by a Sunni majority that the French had tried to sort out in Syria during the "Pan European" occupations . All tribal bullshit that goes all the way back to Islam's beginnings , they've been warring, murdering & enslaving each other since the beginning. What you see happening today is Hassad & the tiny ruling Alawite Shia minoritie desprately scurrying around Damascus fearing for their lives.
