It was a good puzzle. I read the second post before starting. I took them together and started from the southern end of the range bordered by Mexico and California, scanning for familiarity first, then seeking matching topography after noting that none of that area matched. It was then that I decided to go with the Grand Canyon approximation theory and moved my scan appropriately.

This is challenging, compared to most puzzles, but I like the dynamics of problem solving from limited data points aspect. At once, you know that it is there to be found, but it is frustrating when the map doesn't yield its prize after a reasonable search. That is what makes it fun.
