Thanks for your information on the IBM factories in Hungary.
I did not know that they have a second factory there. I was aware of
the Singapore factory. Also apparently IBM with (I think) Toshiba has
75% of the notebook market.

Regarding the margins. I can only tell you what was said in the lecture. He said that these are traditional margins,( but the margins have clearly diminished during thelpast three months. IMO)

One more thing that was surprising to me was that apparently it takes about 20 minutes to assemble a disk drive, but the testing takes one day. It appears that each drive is tested and statistical quality control methods are not yet applied. I have a question for you or anybody else.
When head manufacturers such as APM send their heads to WDC, is the finding of defects delayed to the final testing stage. That is, does APM or RDRT have an independent way of testing the heads.

I managed to ask him also to comment about TeraStor' s new optically assisted drives. He mentioned that the original technology was IBM's, but they did not pursue it. He was very happy as a technical person to see the technology developed. However, his comments were guarded, in regard the possibility to produce high yields with this technology. Well, TeraStor is supposed to bring out a drive next summer based on their technology. Time will tell how successful they will be.
