Fjord Line chooses LNG from Skangass
skangass.com

Skangass has taken yet another important step into the marine market after winning the contract to supply LNG to Fjord Line. Two new cruise ferries are to be supplied with a total of 30,000 tonnes of LNG per year...

...“Through this contract, Risavika Harbour will become Europe’s first port where ships can bunker directly, and unload and load at the same place,” says David Ottesen, CEO of Risavika Harbour...

... When MS “Stavangerfjord” is commissioned, it will be the first and only cruise ferry in the world to have a “single fuel LNG engine”. This means that the ship will exclusively use LNG as bunker...

TOTE Inc. has ordered the world’s two largest natural-gas powered container ships, just four months after getting Coast Guard approval to convert two other ships to natural gas.

The Federal Way-based company this week announced plans for the new ships and options for three more, with the two firm orders to be delivered in early 2015 and 2016.

'Clean Sky' LNG-Powered Ship 'Could be Built Next Year'
Friday December 21, 2012
shipandbunker.com

A design for a liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered bulk carrier developed by COSCO Shipyard Group in China, Greek shipping firm Golden Union, and Lloyd's Register (LR) has received an approval in principal from LR.

Known as "Clean Sky," the design allows for the use of either dual-fuel or tri-fuel engines, with the ability to burn heavy fuel oil (HFO), diesel, or LNG.

The project, which began in June 2011, aimed to develop a commercially viable design based on COSCO's existing conventionally fueled Kamsarmax vessels.

"This news moves the industry far beyond the concept stage," said Nick Brown, Lloyd's Register's Area General Manager and Marine Manager, Greater China.

"A 'Clean Sky' ship could be built next year.

Largest LNG powered Passenger Ship VIKING GRACE
Turku yard hands over pioneering ship to Viking Line...
shippingtimes.co.uk

Viking Line today took delivery of the EUR240 million VIKING GRACE from the STX Finland Oy shipyard in Turku.

She will make her maiden service voyage on Tuesday, January 15.

Viking Line are promoting the ship as one that "represents a totally new generation"

The vessel is an environmental pioneer in the cruise industry. She is the world’s first large passenger vessel to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The cleanest fossil fuel available today, LNG provides major environmental advantages. By using natural gas, hazardous emissions will decrease to a minimum say her owners.

Nitrogen emissions and particulates are reduced by 85 per cent and greenhouse gases by 15 per cent.

Crucially, sulphur emissions are practically zero.

The vessel has a hydrodynamically optimized hull shape and highly effective propulsion machinery that saves energy. Extensive development work has been devoted to the hull shape, which minimizes swell waves. Viking say that in day-to-day operations on board the vessel, recycling and resource optimization will be guiding principles.

EU funding for LNG bunkering vessel project
JANUARY 11, 2013 — A €1,305,000 LNG bunkering project being carried out by AGA AB in the Port of Stockholm, Sweden, is to go ahead with the help of a €261,000 contribution from the European Union's TEN-T program.

AGA, which is supplying the fuel for the LNG-fueled ferry Viking Grace, is to convert an existing vessel, the Fjalir, into an LNG bunkering ship.

It will be used to provide LNG fuel to the Viking Grace (which is initially being fueled from the shoreside) and later to other ships in the Port of Stockholm.

The bunkering vessel will be tested with 1,000 tonnes of LNG, corresponding to a reduction of 300 tonnes of CO2 and 10 tonnes of SO2 in terms of equivalent emissions from traditional shipping fuels. The test results will be measured in close collaboration with the Swedish Transport Agency and the Stockholm County Administrative Board, the main authority in charge of environmental permits.

The results will enable the potential of such a bunkering vessel to be evaluated as well as the need for future permits to be defined with regards to an increasing use of LNG as a fuel in the shipping industry.

The project will be managed by the Trans-European Transport Network Executive Agency and is set to be completed by December 2013.

US carriers lean towards LNG, as need for cleaner fuel and lower costs increases
By Mike Wackett 11.12.2013 theloadstar.co.uk

US Jones Act flag-carriers Horizon Lines and Matson are eyeing liquefied natural gas (LNG) as the fuel of the future

Horizon is looking to convert part of its fleet to a system of diesel fuel and LNG, while Matson is placing an order for two dual-fuelled 3,600teu ships for 2018 delivery...

...Interestingly, Matson’s vessel order to the Aker Philadelphia shipyard specifies a design speed of 23 knots, going against the trend for of slow-steaming, now common practice in the shipping industry. Despite overcapacity in the transpacific trade lane, Matson’s express Chinese service is reported to be running at close to 100% capacity, suggesting that premium services may have a niche demand, even in the slow-steaming era. If vessels with the ability to burn cheaper fuel could be deployed, it would be a win-win for the carrier...

Reduced Bunker Bills "Number 1 Reason" for LNG Switch
Monday December 23, 2013 shipandbunker.com

BC Ferries is still looking at retrofitting existing vessels if it made sense to do so.

British Columbia, Canada, based B.C. Ferry Services Inc (BC Ferries) says the promise of lower fuel bills was the number one reason it decided to back Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) bunkers for three newbuilds announced last week.

"If you ignored capital costs, LNG is about half the price of the diesel we currently use, which is about $0.90 to $1.00 per litre," said Mark C Wilson, BC Ferries' Vice President Engineering, who spoke to Ship & Bunker following last week's announcement that all three of the new vessels will be dual-fuel capable...
