Larry, Yes PCI is in the PC-98 spec.

CREAF is playing up importance of soundblaster compatibility every chance it gets. If DirectX takes off then what does CREAF have to offer? Currently they are very profitable, this is mainly because all the new players are chasing after PCI and it is not taking off as expected. Also CREAF hammers its suppliers to get rock bottom prices, this is a two way street and may of the suppliers are waiting until an alternative spec takes over so that they can go into competition with CREAF.

Can CREAF keep Soundblaster as a spec? My read on this is that INTC and MSFT are both treading very lightly at the moment, especially in areas where it could be said that they are using their size/control to swing the market. If you follow the INTC press they were real hot on this subject about 1 1/2 years ago and now they are nowhere to be found. There is a lot of politics tied up in this one because CREAF is one the few Asian companies that have an IP stake in PC's. In many Asian countries there is resentment that IP all seems to flow toward the US, so many govt's don't really support efforts to protect MSFT and INTC's IP. If Wintel wants support they will need to be seen to be playing a fair game.

Anyway it will be interesting to see how this all unfolds.
