I am also not satisfied with Acronis and have recently purchased EaseUS Todo Backup Home.

I also use Win 7 64 pro and XP. I never had a problem with Aconis and have done dozens if not hundreds of back ups and recoveries.

I only do manual backups, and never use any of the automated features. I did experiment with them at first but I have never liked them or trusted them. I always use the switch to verify an image after its been made. It takes longer but its important I can trust an image will restore if I need it.

Before Acronis I used the various editions of Norton Ghost and found that program to be trouble free too. Others have different stories though.

Incidently, I am in a legal dispute and need some data off my computer I made over a decade ago, and the ghost images are on CD's, not a HD. They have degraded a bit since them but I am confident I will be able to restore at least one of the images from that time. The images are split onto 5 or 6 CD's so its a little tricky getting them back. I have found "brasso" (for cleaning silver) is good at softening surface scratches on CD's. Since about 2007 I have all my images in single files on HD's which will keep almost forever and are highly reliable.

I am currently using Acronis Plus 2010. Not had any problems.

However I have just looked at this Knowledge Base article regarding Acronis 2011

kb.acronis.com

All I can say is its discraceful and I would not tolerate it for a minute. The important fact about restoring an image is all your original computer data is GONE. A failed restore operation is the ultimate disaster that the likes of Acronis is supposed to prevent.

The article goes on to say...

"Start a new backup chain - create a new full backup"

Well sure, yes I would do that, but all my data would have already been destroyed at that point so I think the person at Acronis who wrote that POS article should be fired.

I would ask for a free upgrade (or downgrade) to a version of Acronis that works. A back up image of your system that "might" or "might not" restore is not just utterly useless but an out right liability as you think you are safely backed up but in fact might not be.

Acronis are offering me a cheap upgrade to 2013. I am most interested if they offer you any real help.

Really . Its outrageous imho.

If you still have your version of Acronis I would look at the following worked example before going to the trouble of doing anything else.

You need a separate partition or drive to deposit your computer image on. Its got to have enough space to take the whole image. The size of the image will be about half of your existing used space using the default compression ratio.

In this case I went through the routine of making and image of the four partitions on my working disk and depositing an image on my second disk I used to store acronis images. The final operation has 5 steps in it including the image verify. If you had just one partition to make an image of it would be just two steps including the image verify.

Study and follow the following steps. It included taking options to make the task the highest priority and also to verify the image. The arrows are place where I use a mouse click or two.

It should work FLAWLESSLY. If it doesnt Acronis should give you a version of their software that works.
