Nearly all government has nothing to do with protecting the commons. It's nearly all pork barrel politics. The big government bucks are in "health" [meaning sickness], welfare [meaning transfer of opm to people who have not provided for themselves for whatever reasons], education [meaning mismanaged credentialism and teacher unions, and Big Brother self-dealing kleptocracy to keep political bosses in the manner to which they have become accustomed. None of those are to do with protecting the commons. Roads when I'm king will be paid for by tolls, which will vary by how crowded the roads are. So, in rush hour on busy roads, tolls will be so high that enough people will choose not to travel then, leaving the available space for people who actually do think it worthwhile to spend so much money on driving their car on that particular road at that particular time. The income would be huge. No new roads would be needed. Actually, some new roads are needed but for the most part, we have already reached Peak Roads. As cars become more automatic, faster and safer, fewer lanes will enable increased capacity [about 10x the traffic]. Traffic lights will be a thing of the past. There won't be the latest stupid fashion of speed bumps which are seriously annoying. One of the cheapest and most effective ways to protect the commons is to catch and punish the evil-doers. Make punishment so serious and so rapid that they think twice about ever doing it again. See how in Singapore there is no graffiti and people do not chuck rubbish all over the place. People know they'll be seriously punished, so it's not worthwhile. There's no need for birth control. On the contrary there is room for millions more people, especially of those with improved DNA [from genetic selection and engineering]. Continuing eugenics programmes are rapidly improving the human gene pool but the process can be accelerated dramatically. Mqurice PS: Spare lanes on roads will be converted to take off strips for light aviation which will proliferate.
