I suspect that a long term consequence of laws like Florida's stand your ground will be that murder rates go up because criminals will be inclined to start the crime by killing the victim. No point in taking unneeded risks. The advantage goes to the person who knows what is about to happen, and most victims wouldn't be aware that they are about to die, but the criminal is well aware of what he is about to do. Caring more guns doesn't do anything to help the victim.
