As much as I agree that mutual deterrence works well on paper I disagree it would in a theater. By the time you realize the guy you shot was in fact not the perp. but a 'good samaritan' defending himself from the lone gunman, it will already be too late. Imagine if just 15% of those in a theater were carrying and responded to an lone assailant. The average good folk are not Navy Seals.
