The main character of the story is a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins who presents as a humble yet noble character. The deranged character named Gollum is a tortured soul, bound by his slavery to a magic ring and frequently caught up in petty personal conflicts of his own making... often seen kissing up to get attention then suddenly exploding in nasty and spiteful tantrums. The audience tends to view him at first as base evil but eventually as simply pitiable.

Since Bilbo possesses the magic ring, Gollum compulsively follows, attempts engagement, and tries to get on the good side of Bilbo and friends but repeatedly exposes his wicked nature and miserable existence. By his very presence, he accents the goodness of others while ironically and ultimately furthering their cause.
