When I was in High School in Oakland, it was the Black Panther Party and the Maoists who equated guns with freedom. Many wore bullets on necklaces.

Then, the firearms loving SLA came along in the name of freedom from the hated U.S. government, they shot and killed our African American school superintendent in the back as a "message."

Its interesting how times have changed. Who is now seeing their firearms and bullets as freedom, and the government as the enemy of Americans??

Someone just called into the national NPR talk program, as I write this, to essentially make a case for civilian militia (I would call it vigilantism) as a "solution" for the ineffectiveness of first responders. And these callers are people who claim to love the U.S. Constitution. They aren't too concerned about the integrity of elections for our freedom; free elections are how you end up with gay marriage, progressive taxes, and woman's empowerment to make choices about her body, you know, freedom threatening stuff like that.

Paranoia strikes deep. But no society can last that is built on fear and might-makes-right, rather than hope and often complicated enlightened reason.

'Nuff said.
