>> His two children walk around his property (few acres) with guns and no supervision

What are you calling children? I first went hunting without parental supervision at the age of about 13. Where I grew up that was typical. We knew not to shoot at other people and had a good realization that if you acted like an idiot someone could get killed.

I knew of people who got killed in hunting and/or gun accidents when they got older and alcohol was all over the place.

If 8 year olds are walking around with rifles, I'd be concerned. But by the time most kids are 12 or 13, most are able to comprehend and respect the responsibility, IMO.

It's legal...one example of gun culture and NRA complicity.
Damn the NRA for following laws. :-)

Lucky kids get to shoot targets or varmints on their own property - that would be great fun.

Al,
I am terrified that they will accidentally shoot in the direction of my house and hit a window....guess what...there's nothing I can do. It's legal...one example of gun culture and NRA complicity.
After recent events, it seems that would the least of anyone's concerns.

I'm all for further restrictions on guns. That to me is common sense. But I can't say how that would reduce the violence, since guns would still be easily available on the black market.
So many factors...ethnic heterogeneity, perpetual state of war, poverty, inner city blight, violence on TV, cinema, videogames...and guns...lack of uniformity around the nation regarding permitting, the types available, ease of availability, lack of required training and education, you name it...there's a lot that can be done short of banning guns to educate those who wish to own them...
To make a long story short, I think we as a society are losing our souls. We can try to make up for it by banning guns, banning violence in entertainment, maybe even shrinking the gap between rich and poor, but it will never make up for the growing void within ourselves.

Think about it. That's why people seek out sex, violence, even self-inflicted pain. I hear cutting oneself is all the rage in grade school kids today. They're trying to fill a void by stimulating the senses.

When viewed in the context of a spiritual void, everything makes sense. But the concept of a "spiritual void" itself is anathema to a society that is becoming more and more secularized and less and less accepting of God.

Plus you can always point to other countries that are more secularized and yet don't have as much gun violence as America. But no one can tell me exactly what the difference is there. It's not like they don't have access to the same things America does. Even firearms are easily obtainable outside of America. Ted pointed out that there are 30 guns to every 100 citizens in Sweden. Although that's 1/3 as many as America, I'm surprised that there are even that many in Sweden.

We could also look at Japan. Much less violence there, but if you watch Japanese anime and movies, they're INCREDIBLY twisted with their sex and violence. Modern-day Japan is also very secular. How do they end up not killing each other?

There are so many factors that defy scientific explanation, at least in terms of experimental control and hypothesis. Maybe it's because the human soul truly defies science. Maybe we need something else.
