>It is easiest to simply state that Carter was responsible in every way for the downfall of the Shah and the predictable rise of the "fundamentalist" mullahs>

You put presidents on quite high pedestels. At university I worked with a number of foreigners including 3 Iranian students (they lived here with their families and were "older" actually... in their 30's). Got to wrap with them about their countries while we were working ( I worked my way through school almost full time) and it was around the time when there were "Iranian student protests" in this country so of course I was curious. All of them said it was just a matter of time that the Shaw would be thrown out because of his crazy secret police which were incredibly repressive and hatred has grown to large levels.

So what was that you were saying about Carter???

And yes, Obama's naivete has caused a disastrous implosion of the Middle East. >

We completely disagree on the reality of all these situations... but that is what makes discourse. Causation is an interesting term... to me Obama didn't "CAUSE" anything over there, he couldn't possibly be that powerful. Maybe that's why I'm not scared of him... he's just a guy.
As for the actual main thrust of the point (Carter & economy) that too is a simple matter of history (price of oil, stagflation) and depends on how one looks at it... to one who studied economics (me) which stresses context of entire systems, you don't seem to take other factors into consideration... you clearly think there is direct linear causation of events to the president at the time.

We disagree on the greater picture of how things actually work... completely.
