The coal in my home area is anthracite (hard coal) and it's been in the pits, pardon the pun, since the 40's. Was only used for heating....the area has never recovered. Bituminous (soft coal) is very dirty....and requirements for pollution control at power plants has put pressure on the generating plants but no so much on the mines.
