Previously a company could stake a claim and explore on off-reserve land without consultation with local Native interests. Now the government is pushing for consultation with Native interests prior to claim staking. So if you get an idea where a big gold deposit is you have to alert the closest Indian band you want to stake it and share your plans with them. If you’re lucky depending on which way the wind is blowing they may let you in to stake it but you might have to train them and hire them as claim stakers.

Other bands do not even want your "aura" on their land.
