Hi Bob -- Safe travels...

crh.noaa.gov

Winter storm will impact northern IA/southern WI/ northern IL on thursday afternoon into the night (heaviest at night for this region). Should be lighter snow on Friday...dunno how long it'll take them to clear off the roads. Friday morning, there'll be a 30-40 MPH brisk northwest wind with foot+ in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin tapering throughout the day. It'll be brisk and windy up through OK/Arkansas/MO on Thursday, but not much precipitation until northern MO (light snow by the time you get there...depending how far you go and assuming you take 2 days to get up there). Good luck!

The storm next week...instability is huge, but it doesn't have to convert all potential energy into kinetic. The models now show a doozy for OK, Missouri, AK, IL, OH, MI starting Christmas night over OK and affecting Michigan on Thursday. St.. Louis to Chicago are in the heaviest snow line...ahead of the front will be strong thunderstorms.

With some solar influence, it would deepen track further south...that could result in the disturbance missing the "sweet spot" for converting potential energy to kinetic energy. We'll see...still gotta study this. LOL! Merry Christmas.
