By promoting a fundamentalist Christian prayer event Kansas Governor Sam Brownback is violating the separation of church and state guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, according to a leading secular group.

On Friday, Dec. 7, Americans United for Separation of Church and State released a statement critical of Brownback’s proclamation promoting Reign Down USA, a group that plans to hold a nationally simulcast evangelistic event on Saturday, Dec. 8, in Topeka, Kansas.

In his proclamation promoting the Reign Down USA event, Brownback declared Dec. 8 to be a “Day of Restoration” and called on Americans to “collectively repent of distancing ourselves from God and ask for His mercy on us.”

Vickie Sandell Stangl, president of the Great Plains Chapter of Americans United, said:

“The governor is really overstepping his constitutional bounds. He was elected to serve as governor of our state, not our state pastor-in-chief.

The people of Kansas do not need politicians telling us when, how or whether to pray. If anybody needs to repent, it’s Gov. Brownback. He needs to repent for violating the constitutional separation of church and state.”

Critics claim Brownback has long-standing ties to some of the most extreme elements of the Religious Right and worry that leaders of the Christian fundamentalist movement want to tear down the wall of separation between religion and government and impose their religious viewpoint on all Americans.

What do you think about Governor Brownback making a proclamation promoting a Christian prayer event and asking citizens to “collectively repent of distancing ourselves from God and ask for His mercy on us.” Is this appropriate? Leave a comment - express yourself.
