They are a just like terrorists events. They are rare. It's kind of silly to legislate just because of them. People who said 9/11 "changed everything" were, imo, complete idiots. Terror will always be with us. School shootings will always be with us. Now, that said, how do we minimize this, already small, problem? We don't put guns in the hands of school personnel (my guess is, there would be some ugly accidents or "events" with that kind of idiocy). And we don't legislate weapons bans because of school shootings, we legislate them because guns everywhere in our society are a problem. Little kids find guns and shoot themselves, and their friends. Fathers have "accidents" and kill or maim their kids. They are used in domestic abuse. They are used in bar fights. The real reason to legislate about weapons is all the other problems they cause- not school shootings. I get why 20 little kids being killed gets to people. It's very sad. But the real problem is, little kids are ALWAYS being killed by guns- every week. That's what ought to really upset people. Not just the 20, but the 20 thousand we have lost over the past several years. And many of them lost to accident, preventable accident not to a crazed killer- a killer, let's face it, who would be hard to protect against, unless we really want to live in a military dictatorship with armed guards on every corner. But accidents? Who here thinks we can't put a stop to so many gun accidents, and to kids getting their parents' guns because they are not stored securely? Now that's doable.
