he (R)'s put together a coalition of gun nuts, racists, tax haters, bible-thumpers, military boosters and small government voters on behalf of their true funding base, the wealthy. In the past, the cast of clowns was kept in line with a bone tossed to their issue now and then. You could see who was important by looking at who was giving to the Romney campaign, 75% large buck donors, 25% small buck donors, almost the exact opposite of Obama's funders. But NOW, the clowns have taken over the circus through the primary process, and you have to swear fealty to some truly wacky beliefs to even get elected Republican. The (R)'s are desperately trying to hold this group together instead of supporting more widely popular, sane positions, like taxing the wealthy. As a consequence their base is shrinking, as old white guys die off and saner (R)'s just bail out, mainly from the small government group and the wealthy. Unfortunately the American legislative system plays right into the R dysfunction. If the GOP was just 1 of 4-5 parties, they would not be much of a problem. However, they are 1 of 2 parties and they have managed to gerrymander their party into a position where it has some control and can play obstructionist. That puts the country in a very dangerous position. The American public is just now waking up to how serious the problem is.........its partly why Obama got re elected despite the slow economic recovery. They're long term doomed, but can still cause a lot of problems in their death throes. I think their death throes are about to accelerate. The Newtown massacre has galvanized people in a way that no other gun tragedy has in the past. People want to stop the gun violence in this country. Its become over the top. The NRA reaction on Friday only fuels this intensity. And the NRA is associated with the GOP. I think getting more gun control will lead people to go after other R platform issues that people find objectionable. More and more people will turn away from the party. I think is may be pretty inevitable at this point.
