Great memories.

"When the story was submitted to Galaxy, however, the editor suggested changing the ending so that Charlie retained his intelligence, married Alice Kinnian, and lived happily ever after. [9] [11] Keyes refused to make the change and sold the story to The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction instead. [9] Keyes worked on the expanded novel between 1962 and 1965 [12] and first tried to sell it to Doubleday, but they also wanted to change the ending. Again, Keyes refused and gave Doubleday back their advance. [11] Five different publishers rejected the story over the course of a year [11] until it was published by Harcourt in 1966."

I did not know that. To give in would have destroyed the story. The ending hurts but it is precisely what makes it so great and so undeniable.

There is a short-short about a mouse named Barney who becomes intelligent and then tricks the human into his death in a well. I remember several of the key sentences but I cannot find it on the net. The mouse becomes intelligent enough to pull it all off and he takes over writing the journal in xtreemely bad inglish and speling and asks for female mice to be sent to the island. "No males--just feemales!"

I would love to read that again. It was in an anthology of short-shorts and was probably about 5 pages in total. I think Asimov compiled the collection of 30 or 40 shorts but I could be completely wrong...
Had a great Christmas Eve here. Need to sleep.
