So, while there is been a reduction of homicides from 1.9 to 1.3 -- at least for the most recent year, there have been dramatically more people assaulted and sexually assaulted in the same period.

Is this your conclusion or is it the language of the Aussie government...because if it is, the numbers don't support the words "dramatically more people etc....etc..." in fact the variations are statistically minor in contrast to the drop in HOMICIDES BY GUN...I point you to the following...

In the seven years prior to 1997, firearms were used in 24 percent of all Australian homicides. But most recently, firearms were used in only 11 percent of Australian homicides, according to figures for the 12 months ending July 1, 2007.

I think we can agree that homicide is a more dramatic crime...
