To: whistler3000 who wrote (97356 ) 12/26/2012 4:57:23 PM From: TobagoJack 8 Recommendations Read Replies (1) | Respond to of 219981 it may come as news, but asians are alarmed by other asians when it comes to school choice time my daughter's school is of course 90% asian as we are in hong kong, but we are alarmed by the mainlanders, the koreans, and one chinese indian girl, maya, who is my daughter's friend but one year older tiger mom may be chinese, but the korean moms are nuts daughter of own volition partakes in ballet w/ japanese teachers, chinese calligraphy and brush painting w/ mainland master, elocution w/ british indian teacher, and swimming w/ china national team ex-coach daughter had gotten into her school on own merit because my wife and i did not at the time realize how difficult it would be to get her into a 'good' (i think all schools are okay) school and so had only applied to one once we realized our mistake re the odds, it was already too late to apply to more schools. luckily events worked out. even so, wife had to roll the last 100 yards by focusing her organizational energy and julliard training to help the school with enriching the music program and such. at the time the school had a debenture program (interest-free loan from parents of applicants to the school for the duration of the kid's attendance) of hkd 2m (usd 250k), and that would of course help in gaining admission but is not a guarantee (the logic is that the debenture can be sold in secondary market at profit - a truth) now the school debenture program is set at hkd 6m (usd 750k) and absolutely does not guarantee entry to school i do not do debentures it used to be that if one sibling is already enrolled in school, another applying sibling would almost automatically gain entry. no chance now. erita's school features two teachers to every class of 18 kids, one native english speaker and another native mandarin speaker, both poached from top ranking schools from all around. all classes are taught and tested in dual language, 70/30 mandarin/english in the earlier years, and flipped around in the latter years little jack, not yet 2.5, is already applying to school, one that is different than the school his sister is attending i had the pleasure of filling in my 'profession' which may offer a novelty bonus - gold miner little jack's school would be 'easier' than erita's, and even so, very much more demanding than the average. it is easier in the sense that mere mortals can survive and kids w/ less discipline can actually get by. erita reminds us of my wife, and my mom. little jack reminds us of my brother, father, and me, and i do not do 'diligent'; i do 'astute'. erita has a bunch of girlz following her around, and tells the boyz what to do when and how, whereas jack follows girlz and does what the girlz tell him to do - very worrying i.e. this is erita , miss perfect and loves being the center of attention who won all-hk chinese calligraphy for her age bracket earlier this year, at age 7 and nominated herself and won the class-captain election, all unprompted by mama and dada this is jack, counting on charm, champion of breakfasts ... and looking jack-out-of-the-box astute about to be naughty age for age comparison, and i am starting to worry about jack, and know he shall need much luck erita jack erita jack my suspicion is that whatever the kids eventually decides to focus on, erita's future husband would do better because of erita, whereas jack would do better but best get with a traditional wife, as unclear a professional wife would put up with his antics
