Guns were a necessity to keep the red skins away. Shoot dangerous animals and fend off thieves. Then Americans moved west. There was no law, thus the need for guns. Then the society was established. In a modern society only the state have the monopoly of the use of the force. People are law abiding. They remove shoes when before allowed to board airplanes. They do not drink and drive and they do not need to have a gun if they can call 911. Now the guy who did not drink a few beers not to DUI, who removed his shoes before entering a plane had assault rifles at home?
