You're right - generally just drawing your legally carried gun sends them running. No report or news story is ever printed - estimates are this is what happens millions of time per year.

A California family was enjoying the Christmas holiday as the children were having a sleepover when a home intruder broke into their home. The homeowner, who was looking to protect his family took action and shot and killed the invader. A gun battle occurred at 3:30 A.M. on Saturday morning outside of the home. The homeowner was treated for gunshot wounds along with two other suspects.

The Identification of the deceased home intruder has not yet been released. 21-year-old Thomas Ordonaz, who was also injured in the shooting was later arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and accessory.
