THREAD---News ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Industry News Compaq to market MediaGX-based notebooks and desktops, say sources ByÿMark Harrington Houston Compaq Computer will take its price-busting tactics to the notebook-computer market in January, when it introduces the industry's first MediaGX-based notebook, sources said. Incorporation of the MediaGX processor is part of a larger Compaq plan to use cheap, non-Intel processors to build aggressively configured systems for the desktop and notebook markets. As reported in Computer Retail Week last month, Compaq in January is expected to officially announce two new desktop PCs that use Advanced Micro Devices' 233MHz microprocessors. One, the model 4540, will include 32MB of RAM, a 3.2GB hard drive, a 20x CD-ROM drive, a 56K-bps modem, 2MB VGA graphics and 256K cache at a $1,099 minimum advertised price. It will ship in December, but won't be officially introduced until January, when its price will be reduced to $999, sources said. Another model, the 4550, will add a Zip drive, a 4GB hard drive and a 24x CD-ROM drive. It will ship in the first week of January at a $1,299 minimum advertised price, sources said. Compaq has told partners a majority of its consumer notebook PC sales next year could be non-Intel-based. The entry-level notebook unit is a soon-to-be-announced 200MHz MediaGX-based unit with MMX, sources said. The price of the piece will be $1,999, they added. Compaq is also expected to introduce at least two Advanced Micro Devices-based Presario notebooks at around the same time, sources said. They will be priced at $2,499 and $2,999, the sources said. A Compaq spokesman hadn't returned phone calls at press time. Compaq earlier this year was one of the first companies to incorporate MediaGX processors in its desktops, allowing the company to hit market-breaking price points. It was the first top-tier brand to introduce a $999 desktop earlier this year, and lowered pricing to $799 just months later. Compaq is expected to incorporate the MediaGX 200MHz processor in its desktops in January. Cyrix is also expected to introduce a 233MHz version of the MediaGX at that time, sources said. Cyrix declined comment. One market watcher said the MediaGX will likely see wider incorporation in notebooks as the year progresses, noting the processor's highly integrated design makes it a better fit for space-constrained notebooks than desktops. ÿBEST WISHES BILL
