FWIW, coming in a bit late on this. I have the iPhone 3GS. It's 2 full generations away from being the latest. But, for my needs, it's more than enough capabilities. I only paid $200 for it from Consumer Cellular. For about $35 per month I get 350 minutes of phone time plus more than enough download capability. For me, this is a very complete tool, it's truly a computer in my pocket with the few additional apps I've added.

My wife had an old Nokia for years, and doesn't like anything new fangled, but I got her one of these as an upgrade.

gsmarena.com

Although it has 4G and gizmos galore its easy to use. She loves it.

Android has had some bad press for being insecure. I think you will see that most of that is big biz influenced hogwash. All internet connected smart phones are susceptible
to security concerns, as is the internet. Android is Google though, and all its associations.

The "one XL" only has dual processors while the earlier "one" is a quad but my review says its a better balance all things considered. Cost is an important factor for me, and anything apple related is usually quickly tossed out from and serious consideration for that reason alone.

I have only a HTC Desire HD at the moment. Its really good, but not quite as good as the model above.

I am due an upgrade, but so far my provider is making things more expensive to get the same phone as my wife . I figured they were just cashing in on the XMAS rush so I have hopes to get one early next year.

I use a bunch of apps on it. Avast make a really good security product for protecting your phone, including lost/stolen situations.

I have not rooted any of my phones yet. I am waiting to upgrade before experimenting on my old phone, after I found the "effin manual" as they call it, and have time to spare reading it.

A "readme.txt" file would have been simple and nice to have, but I will have to spend some time on the site to figure whats going on there. They seem to be kinda arrogant and cavalier by the looks of things.

I forgot to mention, there are Windows phones now, Nokia has them you probably have seen advertised recently.
